Sterling Mining Company Legacy

Dedicated to the men and women of Sterling Mining Company

Sterling Mining Company was founded in 1903 in Wallace, Idaho, at the heart of the world‑famous Coeur d’Alene Mining District, one of the richest silver‑producing regions in history. Over more than a century in business, in 1998 the company under the leadership of Raymond De Motte began a bold expansion plan leading to acquiring, exploring and bring into product three silver mining properties in Idaho’s Silver Valley and in Mexico’s prolific Zacatecas region. The company became known for revitalizing historic mines, advancing modern exploration, with visionary management delivering until 2008 excellent shareholder returns.

During the late 1990s and 2000s, Sterling’s progress led to a wider following and a listing of its silver mining stock in the United States, Canada and Germany – Sterling Mining Company’ stock price rose more than 1,000% between 1998 and 2008. The company’s stock performance reflected renewed production efforts, strong silver prices, and growing interest in mid‑tier silver producers operating in established mining jurisdictions.

Sterling’s stewardship of the Sunshine Mine—one of North America’s most iconic silver mines—marked a defining chapter in the company’s history. Combined with its operations in the Coeur d’Alene District and Mexico, Sterling’s expansion represents how with vision and drive a small mining company can produce dramatic results.

Today, this website preserves the history, legacy, and lessons of Sterling Mining Company. It honors the memory of the men and women who worked at Sterling Mining, in the Coeur d’Alene Mining District and the Zacatecas Silver District, and the opportunity Silver Mining Stocks may offer within the broader precious‑metals market. The story offers a tale of silver mining stock for investors of the opportunities under the bold management of Sterling Mining Company and the rising silver market during the period 1998 through May 2008.

Yet the story of Sterling Mining Company also offers a cautionary tale: in May 2008 during delays in returning the Sunshine returning to full production, a board coup happened and new management installed. The new board and management team ran the company into the ground in both Idaho and Mexico, and by 2009 was out of business.
